Happy Christmas and All That

A Christmas Message from Shooting The Dog

Christmas Windows at Shooting The Dog

It’s nearly here again! We’ve had a pretty busy year here at Shooting The Dog, and, as we never like to stagnate, a year of more changes to the business.

We have changed the way we do things: moved the studio out to the front of shop, introduced our in-person viewing sessions and changed suppliers for many of our products. All in order to provide the best service and highest quality products we can, while trying to keep things reasonably affordable for our clients.

This year hasn’t been the easiest, the high street seems to be getting quieter every year. Our running costs keep getting higher, and suppliers prices are rising all the time. So making a profit, while not charging ridiculous amounts, is a challenge to say the least. But we persevere, and hopefully we can keep going through 2020.

One more session to go

I have one more session booked in before Christmas, two border terriers, so that should be fun. Then we will take a short break over Christmas and the New Year – although if someone is in a rush for a pet portrait I am sure I can fit them in. Just contact us here and we’ll get back to you.

A quick recap

As we are getting towards the end of the year, I thought I would have a quick look back at all the wonderful dogs I have had the pleasure and privilege to work with during the year. So below is a selection of some of the stars of 2019. Many thanks to everyone who has used our services over the last 12 months. Especially the pet owners who have allowed me to get away with playing with your pets and making out that I am working.

I really love what I do and can only continue to get away with it your help.

I’m sure I have missed some out, and apologies if I have. Every dog I photographed this year has been brilliant, some of them have been challenging, but everyone of them is a star in my eyes.

Time to wrap it up

That’s it for our 2019 Christmas message. Except to say to you all, have a very happy Christmas, and I wish you all a successful and peaceful New Year.

Thank you to everyone who has had their pet photographed, or a picture framed, or even just popped in to buy a postcard. You all keep us up and running and for that we are very grateful.

End of Promotion

Christmas Card Mini-Sessions

Our Christmas Card Mini-Sessions promotion has finished for the year now. Many thanks to everyone who came in for some unique and personal Christmas cards featuring your dogs. It has been great fun, with a wide range of dogs coming into the studio over the last few months.

A selection of our models

Here are a few of the dogs that came into the studio:

If you missed the promotion then our standard pet portrait sessions are always available. Just get in touch with us and we’ll sort out the rest for you.

Our gift vouchers are also available in the shop, or you can order on line. All the information is here.

Pre-Christmas – lots of rain, dear.

A Review of October

It doesn’t seem to have stopped raining since the beginning of October; okay we have had a couple of sunny days, but not many. And wind – it’s been so windy just lately. Not a good combination for photography, at least not my sort of photography. Who wants a portrait of a windswept, muddy, wet, bedraggled dog?

Still the studio work continues, and we have had a fairly good take up on the Christmas Card mini-sessions, which have been great fun.

Christmas Card Mini-Sessions

If you would like some unique Christmas Cards…

We have also been messing about with “silly” pet portraits during October – just trying out some ideas really. This is the sort of thing ..

Very silly stuff, but a lot of fun.

A Fidget Update

Fidget seems to be coping with the tablet change over quite well. He was originally taking 45mg of Epiphen in the mornings, and 60mg in the evening. He has cut down to 30mg morning and evening, without any adverse effects, and is due to drop the morning dosage to 15mg next week. So fingers crossed it doesn’t kick of the seizures again.

In the meantime, he is enjoying frequent visits to the beach and the park, where he is running about like a puppy again – which is brilliant to see. You don’t realise what effect these drugs have on your dogs until your “get them back” again!

… and on into November

There is still time to book your pet in for a pet portrait and get your wall art or albums in time for Christmas – but don’t leave it too late ! Just contact us and we’ll arrange everything for you, and at your convenience.

Our Shooting The Dog pet photography gift vouchers are now available to buy directly from the website. You can do that here.

Our Christmas Card Mini-Sessions are available until the end of November, so don’t miss out – book today!

Oh, and if you are beginning to think about what to get your pet for Christmas, check out our friends at Ruffle Snuffle Mats – they make loads of exciting things to enrich the life of your pet.

Christmas Card Mini-Sessions

It’s October, so it’s time to launch our Christmas card mini-sessions, which will be available throughout October and November.

Christmas Card Mini-Sessions

What’s a Christmas Card Mini-Session?

Good question! It’s a half an hour photo shoot resulting in some special Christmas cards with your pet as the star. £35 will get you your mini-session and ten Christmas cards, if you want more you can order as many extra cards as you like at just £3.00 a card. You can even choose more than one of your images to make up your order, so that your friends don’t all get the same card.

Do I need to bring any props?

You certainly can if you want to. We can provide a small selection of Santa hats and reindeer antlers, but if there is something special you want then it would be best if you bring it along to the shoot.

What About Christmas Magic?

We can add a bit of sparkle, snow or whatever you have in mind during post processing of the images. Discuss it with us at the shoot to get your perfect Christmas card.

There may be an extra charge for this depending on how much magic you want to add!

Can i bring my twenty dogs?

With the limited time for the photo shoot, and to ensure that we spend enough time with each pet, these mini sessions are limited to just one pet at a time. If you have multiple pets that you would like in the same card then please ask when booking, but to ensure that we have enough time to get the best photographs you will need to book a multiple session.

I love the image, can i buy it as wall arT?

Of course you can. If there is an image from your session that you decide you would like up on the wall then you can order wall art in exactly the same way we do for our normal sessions.

What if you have already shot my pet?

Don’t worry you are not left out. Just get in touch in the normal way and we will do our Christmas magic on one (or more) of your existing photos. The cards will cost £3.00 each.

How do I book my Christmas Card Mini-Session?

Contact us in the normal way, we’ll call you at a convenient time to arrange a suitable date and time. We’ll take care of everything from there.

Just mention Christmas Card Mini-Session in the enquiry section.

It’s Christmas Time ….

Well things are beginning to slow down now as we get to the last few days before the big event.

The final few framing jobs just need to be finished off (and collected by the customers!), and then we can relax … and go for a pre-Christmas beer.

2018 has been a busy year, with things changing slightly as we try to stay ahead of an ever changing market place. What with people worried about their finances and how the “BREXIT” effect will impact them, trying to tempt them to spend money on a luxury item is never going to be easy. Add to that a few problems with a naughty intervertebral disc and … let’s just say it has been difficult at times.

That said, we have had some wonderful customers through our doors this year, and we are already looking forward to shooting a lot more pets in 2019.
The calendar is already open, so don’t be shy about making a booking!

This year we have been looking at ways to make the mundane, paperworky (that’s my new word of the month) things easier. We have have started using FramR software for pricing the framing work, and Studio Ninja software to streamline the photography side of things. We have some minor things to iron out in both of these to fit the way we work, but we are getting there.

And so to next year ..

As with this year, the business will be moving more away from the original “Tom Horsley Photography” ideas, and much more down the “Shooting The Dog” road.

We pride ourselves on our pet portraits, we love doing them, and want to produce the best results we can for our customers.

So, next year should see some more changes to the shop; with less random “stuff” on the shelves, and more things related to the pet photography service on display. Print sales from the shop have pretty much dried up, so we’ll be moving all the landscape print sales to the web site only, and free up some more space in the shop.

Other than that, unless I come up with a cunning plan or win the lottery, we’ll continue to provide, what we hope is, quality service with everything we do, at a reasonable price (while still be able to eat occasionally!).

Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year, and we look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year.

Oh, and for those of you who have had you pet photographed with us before there might well be a very special offer for a follow-up shoot next year. I’m sure some details will be being published soon.

November News …

Well, November has been and gone – very quickly in my mind.

We’ve been doing lots of work on the web site this month, and The Framing Dept continues to be busy as usual.

We had two dog photography sessions last week, one with a wonderful rescue Bulldog, and the other was with two eleven month old Chihuahua x JRT brothers (it was chaos, but in a lovely way!)

It’s a two shoot week!

Christmas Window 2017

Today we have been getting the shop window ready for Christmas, hard work but well worth it I think.

Crouching in the windows most of the day hasn’t done my sciatica much good, so it might take until Christmas to recover!

Our Christmas Advert

It seems all the rage with the major retailers to release a cinematic extravaganza each Christmas, so this year we thought we would jump on the gravy train.

Here is our Christmas advert for 2017 – move over John Lewis and M&S you have some competition.

Hope you like it, and please share it around.
