We are going to start a series on the blog looking at our products in more detail over the next few weeks.

Today we are starting with our traditional framed prints.

Triptychs

Another way to show off your photographs in a frame is in a triptych. Three images in the same frame. We offer two print sizes for our triptychs. The smaller one being three 7×5 prints and the larger one being three A4 prints. The frames can either be portrait (three images shown vertically) or landscape (three images shown horizontally).

Is Pet Photography Expensive?

We hear it a lot from people outside the studio. Admiring the photographs in the window and then telling each other how expensive it must be; even though they haven’t asked us. So today’s post is all about the money.

So, is it expensive?

Well to be honest it’s not cheap. But then if you wanted cheap you wouldn’t be looking at a professional pet photographer. We don’t want to be cheap! What we want is to offer value for money, good service, and high quality products.

Art work that will last a lifetime, memories that live on forever – and that doesn’t really fall into the cheap bracket.

A Quick Comparison

Let’s take a look at one of our popular products – our wonderful 75cm x 50cm acrylic print.

A glossy high definition print that oozes quality and definitely makes a statement in any home. It’s big, it fabulous … and it retails at £225.

If looked after properly, it will last a lifetime – so that’s a one time cost.

We decided to take a look around on the internet for something to compare this to, to try and show what great value for money this investment would be. We struggled to find anything interesting to be honest, but we did find one or two interesting things.

Make-up – I’m not making this up!

According to a study in 2017, women spend an average of £450 per year on make-up. That would almost pay for two of our big acrylic prints – and you would be able to wear make-up again next year!

An average of £200 a year is just spent on fixing eyebrows that were plucked to oblivion only a few years ago.

Must Have Coffee … Really, I Need A Coffee!

In the UK the average person is spending more than £300 a year on coffee, and over £700 a year on wine.

If you just cut down a bit not only would your blood pressure thank you, but you would soon be able to afford our fabulous big acrylic print … that will last forever.

So What I mean is ….

Although pet photography can look expensive, once you look at how much we spend on things that really don’t last long (especially coffee and wine, in my particular case) then you can see that it really is good value for money. And with a £50 credit towards wall art purchases when you book your photo shoot, then I would go as far as to say it’s a bargain.

2020 – A Brand New Decade

Happy New Year!

That’s it, our Christmas break is over, and we’re back in the shop – so Happy New Year to you all. As we start a brand new decade, we wonder what it has in store for us all.

Hopefully, it will be a peaceful time, where we all prosper and take care of the planet and each other. Well we can at least hope!

Mel is busy sorting out a few framing jobs, Tom is putting together a few ideas for pet photography sessions and Fidget is asleep in his basket.

We are making a few changes in the shop, that should come to fruition over the next week or so.

We will be having a bit more space put aside to show off the “Brilliant Bygones” collection of ephemera. So expect to see some weird and wonderful framed (and unframed) pieces from times gone by to be on the wall very soon.

We are having to call it a day with the crafting supplies; the opening of The Range in Paignton recently has really killed off what little demand there seemed to be for it at the prices we have to charge to remain profitable. It seems that Torbay Council would rather allow the building of out of town shopping with free parking, than support the local town centres.

Do come in and say “hello” if you are passing, or even better, bring us some work!

Our Christmas Card Sessions

By now everyone should have had their Christmas cards, so it is safe to show you some of the cards we produced before Christmas. We had a great response to this promotion and will definitely be doing it again this year.

Final Shoot of 2019

Our final shoot of 2019 was of Dexter and Riley. Two Border Terrier brothers who couldn’t have been more different when performing in front of the camera. Dexter was quiet and demure, while Riley was really up for it and in your face. Great fun and as always it was a pleasure to get to work with them.

… And So into 2020

As we move into the new year, we are looking forward to working with lots more lovely dogs, and hopefully we’ll get to work with some other pets as well. Would love to get the chance to work with some of the more exotic pets – snakes and lizards maybe.

We had quite a few gift vouchers go out as gifts for Christmas, so we are expecting to see those coming in as booking soon.

Our gift vouchers have no expiry date, so if you received one as a gift, don’t panic! You can always wait until the warmer weather comes around again and go for an outdoor, on-location shoot if you wish; or maybe even a snow scene, if we get any of the white stuff over the winter.

One slight change we are making with our products for 2020, if you purchase a piece of wall art or an album we will now provide you with a USB memory stick of social media ready images as a gift. So now you will be able to share your images with your friends and family at no extra cost.

Why not take a look at the lovely reviews our customers are leaving us at Trustpilot? Then, if you are ready to join the list of happy customers, use the link below to start the process of getting your pets photographed and creating a memory that will last a lifetime.

Why not book a photo session

On line booking available

Christmas Card Mini-Sessions

It’s October, so it’s time to launch our Christmas card mini-sessions, which will be available throughout October and November.

Christmas Card Mini-Sessions

What’s a Christmas Card Mini-Session?

Good question! It’s a half an hour photo shoot resulting in some special Christmas cards with your pet as the star. £35 will get you your mini-session and ten Christmas cards, if you want more you can order as many extra cards as you like at just £3.00 a card. You can even choose more than one of your images to make up your order, so that your friends don’t all get the same card.

Do I need to bring any props?

You certainly can if you want to. We can provide a small selection of Santa hats and reindeer antlers, but if there is something special you want then it would be best if you bring it along to the shoot.

What About Christmas Magic?

We can add a bit of sparkle, snow or whatever you have in mind during post processing of the images. Discuss it with us at the shoot to get your perfect Christmas card.

There may be an extra charge for this depending on how much magic you want to add!

Can i bring my twenty dogs?

With the limited time for the photo shoot, and to ensure that we spend enough time with each pet, these mini sessions are limited to just one pet at a time. If you have multiple pets that you would like in the same card then please ask when booking, but to ensure that we have enough time to get the best photographs you will need to book a multiple session.

I love the image, can i buy it as wall arT?

Of course you can. If there is an image from your session that you decide you would like up on the wall then you can order wall art in exactly the same way we do for our normal sessions.

What if you have already shot my pet?

Don’t worry you are not left out. Just get in touch in the normal way and we will do our Christmas magic on one (or more) of your existing photos. The cards will cost £3.00 each.

How do I book my Christmas Card Mini-Session?

Contact us in the normal way, we’ll call you at a convenient time to arrange a suitable date and time. We’ll take care of everything from there.

Just mention Christmas Card Mini-Session in the enquiry section.

Sample Books and Camping

September is nearly over, and has seen the arrival of our sample photo books and a well earned early autumn short camping trip.

Sample Photo Books

With a change to a new supplier, it was exciting to receive our sample fine art photo book this month. They come in a presentation box, and have a wonderful linen finish cover to them.

Book Sample - Title Page

We can add any text you would like, so if you wanted to tell your pet’s life story then this is the perfect product for you.

Book Sample - Inner Pages

They also make the perfect solution when you can’t quite make up your mind what photograph to select from your photo shoot.

Gift Voucher Re-launch

Gift Vouchers

We have also re-launched our gift vouchers over the last month or so. More information can be found here.

The perfect gift for the pet lover in your life, and can be customised to your exact requirements.

SEptember Camping Trip

Camping at Hennock
The Perfect Campsite

As usual at this time of year, me and Fidget escaped the town centre life and headed to the country with our trusty tent for a few days. The weather was perfect and the campsite was a dream. Just what we needed to unwind and relax for a few days.

Camping - Sleepy Dog

Little Fidget had a wonderful time, and never ceases to adapt to life under canvas. Long walks in and around Dartmoor ensured he always slept well.

Camping - Ball Games

He was also (as ever) always up for a game of ball when the opportunity arose.

Tent lit up at night

But now we are back, and getting ready for the next three months in the lead up to Christmas. October will see the relaxing of the dog bans on the local beaches, so we are hoping that we get a few location shoots booked in for some beach action.

Puppy Picture

On my next blog I hope to be able to tell you a little bit more about this little character.

Happy Birthday To Us!!

July 2007 – Tom Horsley Photography Opens

Shop Front July 2007

In July of 2007, I opened my little shop selling prints of Brixham, and a few wildlife images. It was all very simple, and, of course I made lots of mistakes along the way.

As I was preparing to open, I tried to ignore the comments of “Well, that won’t last long” and many similar comments made by passers by.

Since 2007, the market has changed, everyone has a camera on their phone, and no-one seems to want to buy pictures any more … so we had to adapt and find our way in the world.

JULy 2019 – RE-BRANDING To “Shooting The DOg” Completed

Shop front July 2019

A chance meeting with a framer who had recently moved to the town, ended up with “The Framing Dept”, as we now call it, being created.

I decided to use some of the skills I had acquired as a wildlife photographer and concentrate on the pet and dog market.

“Shooting The Dog” finally materialised, and today the new shop sign was finished. Twelve years on, and I am still here .

So, to those who claimed I wouldn’t last long, what have you got to say for yourselves now?

12th Birthday Celebration Offer

So here’s to the future, and whatever that holds.

You can be part of the story as well. To celebrate our 12 years in business we have a very special offer. Details are below:

12th Birthday Special Offer

It’s Christmas Time ….

Well things are beginning to slow down now as we get to the last few days before the big event.

The final few framing jobs just need to be finished off (and collected by the customers!), and then we can relax … and go for a pre-Christmas beer.

2018 has been a busy year, with things changing slightly as we try to stay ahead of an ever changing market place. What with people worried about their finances and how the “BREXIT” effect will impact them, trying to tempt them to spend money on a luxury item is never going to be easy. Add to that a few problems with a naughty intervertebral disc and … let’s just say it has been difficult at times.

That said, we have had some wonderful customers through our doors this year, and we are already looking forward to shooting a lot more pets in 2019.
The calendar is already open, so don’t be shy about making a booking!

This year we have been looking at ways to make the mundane, paperworky (that’s my new word of the month) things easier. We have have started using FramR software for pricing the framing work, and Studio Ninja software to streamline the photography side of things. We have some minor things to iron out in both of these to fit the way we work, but we are getting there.

And so to next year ..

As with this year, the business will be moving more away from the original “Tom Horsley Photography” ideas, and much more down the “Shooting The Dog” road.

We pride ourselves on our pet portraits, we love doing them, and want to produce the best results we can for our customers.

So, next year should see some more changes to the shop; with less random “stuff” on the shelves, and more things related to the pet photography service on display. Print sales from the shop have pretty much dried up, so we’ll be moving all the landscape print sales to the web site only, and free up some more space in the shop.

Other than that, unless I come up with a cunning plan or win the lottery, we’ll continue to provide, what we hope is, quality service with everything we do, at a reasonable price (while still be able to eat occasionally!).

Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year, and we look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year.

Oh, and for those of you who have had you pet photographed with us before there might well be a very special offer for a follow-up shoot next year. I’m sure some details will be being published soon.

November News …

Well, November has been and gone – very quickly in my mind.

We’ve been doing lots of work on the web site this month, and The Framing Dept continues to be busy as usual.

We had two dog photography sessions last week, one with a wonderful rescue Bulldog, and the other was with two eleven month old Chihuahua x JRT brothers (it was chaos, but in a lovely way!)

Christmas will now soon be with us, so don’t forget our Christmas Gift Voucher offer, it would make the perfect Christmas gift for the pet lover in your life.

It’s a two shoot week!

Two photo shoots booked in this week. First one is tomorrow morning, and a two dog shoot booked in for Friday afternoon.

Don’t miss out!

More Hours Needed Please!!

A very quick update because I haven’t done one for a while, and I don’t really have the time to do this one. So  apologies for being in a rush and not taking too much time over this.

Anyway, we did some of this back in September …

Then October was kind of busy doing things like this:…

And some of this ..

Then a bit of this …

Oh, and we rounded out the month doing this ….

… and all the time trying to find new ways to attract more clients.

Hopefully this run of “busy” will continue!
